  Carotid

In 1993 the Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial (ACST) was launched. It is a simple trial which has set out to ask the question 'Does Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) prevent disabling stroke or death in patients with asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis?'

When randomisation stopped in 2003 the ACST had randomised 3120 patients. With half the patients being randomised to surgery (CEA) plus best medical treatment and the other half to best medical treatment alone.

In May 2004 the ACST published the 5-year results ' Prevention of disabling and fatal strokes by successful carotid endarterectomy in patients without recent neurological symptoms' was published in The Lancet (vol 363: 1491-1502). The ACST presentation slides are now available on our results page

We are planning to publish the 10 year results in early in 2008.

For the final results of the ACST we must obtain one follow-up

for 2006 on all our patients.
